The association between periodontal diseases and systemic conditions such as heart disease and stroke, and a higher risk of preterm low birth-weight babies, is garnering attention in the media. Similarly, recognition of the threats posed by periodontal diseases to patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, respiratory diseases and osteoporosis is acknowledged.
The following are some links to recent stories and resources on these topics:

Although dental care tops the list of low-income children’s unmet health needs, foundation funding devoted to oral health has been miniscule, compared with both the need and total grant making, Shelly Gehshan explains in “Foundations’ Role in Improving Oral Health: Nothing to Smile About.”
She notes that in 2005, foundation giving for dental education and dental care was $55.6 million, or 1.6 percent of total health grant making.
This article is available for download from the Oral Health America website.

Are You Frustrated Trying to Access Journal Articles?
Despite the assumption that everything is available freely on the web, most professional journals require a subscription to retrieve articles.
The following are some tips for accessing articles:
- You must enter the journal through the library website in order for the subscription to be recognized
-
If you are offsite you will need to access with your
library account. At some point you will be prompted for your username and password
-
We dont have subscriptions to every journal
electronically, however we may have the title in
print, so be sure to search the
library catalog by journal title
-
If we do not own the journal in print or electronically you may wish to order the article through
Interlibrary Loan: $3 residents, $5 faculty.
-
In many cases, if you enter PubMed or OVID through the library website, and we have an electronic subjscription to the journal you are looking for, you will be linked directly to the text of the article you want. Look for links that read “Find Text at UR“.
-
There are still some publishers that require an
additional username and password to access the full text of their articles. If you are having problems accessing full-text, please call the library at 275-3247 or select
“Ask a Librarian” from any of our web pages.
Those journals requiring additional authentication include:
International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants
International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry
International Journal of Prosthodontics
Journal of Adhesive Dentistry
Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry
Journal of Oral Laser Applications
Journal of Orofacial Pain
Quintessence International
Above all else, remember, you can ask us to help you anytime!

For those of you who use OVID to search the MEDLINE database, we have migrated to Ovid’s new platform, OvidSP. In addition to a fresh design, OvidSP features:
- Personal Accounts - save searches, set up AutoAlerts and eTOC alerts using e-mail or RSS delivery, and annotate search results.
- Extended Session Timeouts- inactive sessions will not time out for one hour when the Ovid site remains open in the browser window.
- Spell Check - catch misspellings of search terms.
- Display Abstracts - without leaving the search results page.
The Ovid Syntax tab will provide all Ovid’s advanced search options including mapping to MeSH terms and other subject headings, as well as Boolean searching. Continue to click the Find Text button to link to full-text articles.
In addition to MEDLINE, the OVID platform contains resosurces such as:
