NEW Systematic Reviews In Oral Health

The Cochrane Collaboration recently published the following systematic reviews.  Full text access is available for URMC affiliates.

Interventions for treating traumatised ankylosed permanent front teeth:  This review found that there is currently insufficient high level evidence for comparing the effectiveness of different treatment methods for ankylosed front teeth.

Interventions for treating oral mucositis for patients with cancer receiving treatment :  The review found weak and unreliable evidence that using an allopurinol mouthwash, granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factors, immunoglobulin or human placental extract may relieve or cure the ulcers caused by cancer treatments.

Topical fluoride as a cause of dental fluorosis in children: The aim of this review was to evaluate whether the use of fluoride toothpaste by children is associated with an increased risk of developing dental fluorosis in children. outweigh the risk of fluorosis. In such circumstances, careful brushing by parents/adults with toothpastes containing higher levels of fluoride would be beneficial.

Fluoride toothpastes of different concentrations for preventing dental caries in children and adolescents : This review compares toothpastes with different amounts of fluoride.

If toothpaste fluoridated at 500 parts per million and lower shows no beneficial effects, it doesn’t make any sense that water fluoridated to 1 ppm has any beneficial effects.
