New Hours at Bibby Library

May 21, 2013

Thank you to all our dedicated users for your patience as I have transitioned into my new role as Bibby Librarian.  For those that may not have heard, the position is now part-time, so I’m at Bibby Library 24 hours per week.

This will cause some changes, the first being the library’s hours of operation.

Bonnie and I have worked together to create a schedule that maximizes the number of business hours that we are open.

We hope you approve!

New Bibby Library Hours of Operation:

  • Monday:       8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Tuesday:       8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Wednesday: 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM
  • Thursday:     8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Friday:          8:30 AM to 12:00 PM

Don't Forget! smiley icon

Even though the library is no longer staffed on Wednesday morning or Friday afternoon, keep in mind that authorized users can still access the library at any time with their University ID.

All we ask is that you refrain from propping the door open, nor allowing access to unauthorized users. Bibby library is open to the public only during staffed hours, and having the doors locked in our absence insures the safety of our facility, the collection, and our users.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Happy Birthday Journal of the American Dental Association!

January 15, 2013

NDA2The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) is commemorating 100 years of publication. Originally titled The official Bulletin of the National Dental Association, the first issue appeared in November 2013.

To celebrate, the next 12 issues of JADA will include commentaries, editorials and other special articles.

Many of Eastman Dental’s faculty, staff and students have published articles in JADA.  That scholarship will be highlighted on the bulletin board outside Bibby Library.  We hope you will stop and explore Eastman Dental’s contributions to JADA through the years.

Finally, Bibby Library provides access to the online version of JADA to all URMC affiliates.  You can  find the print version back to 1923 in Bibby Library and issues from 1913-1922 in the  Rare Books and Serials department at Miner Library. To be notified when a new issue is published, enter your email address here.

Discover the World of Edward Angle

May 20, 2011

Thanks to a generous donation from EIOH faculty Dr. Mark Hatala, Bibby library has acquired the World of Edward Hartley Angle.

This four-volume set contains the letters, accounts and patents from the man regarded as “the father of modern orthodontics.” Published by The Angle Society, the book set has been critically praised as an important contribution to the history of orthodontics.

The books are available at Bibby library and may be borrowed by any U of R affiliate.

What Everyone Ought to Know about Eastman Dental

April 28, 2011

Bibby Library has preserved the history of Eastman Dental and dentistry in the Rochester New York area through its print and digital archive collections. The American Library Association has designated the week of April 24-30 as preservation week.

Here are a few interesting facts about Eastman Dental:

1.  Eastman Dental has been providing oral health care services to the Rochester community since its opening in 1915.

2.  Eastman Dental is also a training school for dentists who wish to become specialists. The school has been in operation since 1915.

3.  Eastman Dental, originally named the Rochester Dental Dispensary, was the first institution in New York State to offer a training program for young women to become dental hygienists.  Established in 1915, the School for Dental Hygiene was moved to Monroe Community College in 1964.

4.  Founder George Eastman was so satisfied with his efforts that he went on to establish 5 other Eastman Dental clinics in countries throughout Europe.

5.  The first director, Dr. Harvey Burkhart, served until he passed away at the age of 82, in 1946.

For more information on the history of Eastman Dental, visit our archival collections, contact us, or read “Leading the Way: Eastman and Oral Health.”
