Highly Cited Dental Journals

Thomson Reuters has announced the 2011 most highly cited journals.  The top 15 cited journals in dentistry for 2011, according to their impact factor, are:

  1. Periodontology 2000
  2. Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research
  3. Journal of Dental Research
  4. Dental Materials
  5. Journal of Clinical Periodontology
  6. Journal of Dentistry
  7. Journal of Endodontics
  8. Oral Oncology
  9. Oral Microbiology and Immunology
  10. Molecular Oral Biology
  11. Journal of Periodontology
  12. Journal of Orofacial Pain
  13. Clinical Oral Implants Research
  14. Oral Diseases
  15. Clinical Oral Investigations

Bibby Library subscribes to most of these journals and many other titles in dentistry.  To keep up to date with what is being published, we suggest that you register for email delivery of each journal’s new-issue alerts.

Top Ten Cited Journals in Dentistry

The 2009 journal citation reports have been published and are available from the ISI Web of Knowledge database. Produced annually, these reports evaluate scholarly journals for their research impact. Out of 64 journals, the top ten in dentistry are as follows:

  1. Journal of Dental Research
  2. Journal of Periodontology
  3. Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology and Endodontology
  4. Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  5. American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

New: Journal Citation Reports

The 2008 Journal Citation Reports from the Web of Science are now available.  The following dental journals were in the top ten for highest impact factor.

  • Periodontology 2000
  • Journal of Clinical Periodontology
  • Journal of Dental Research
  • Dental Materials
  • Oral Oncology
  • Clinical Oral Implant Research
  • Journal of Endodontics
  • International Endodontic Journal
  • Oral Diseases
  • Journal of Orofacial Pain

I am happy to report that Bibby library currently subscribes to 9 out of 10 of these titles, and they are all available electronically for URMC affiliates.

Tools to Alert You When your Works are Cited

My Cited Articles List, a tool within the ISI Web of Knowledge database, will send an email to the author each time his or her work is cited in another article.  Note that this feature pertains only to articles indexed in the ISI databases.

To register, follow these steps:

  1. Access Web of Science.   Note: URMC affiliates must have a library account to access off-site.
  2. Select one of the ISI Web of Knowledge databases to search.
  3. In the “search for” box, enter last name and first initial.  Select “in author” from the drop menu.  Click search.
  4. From the results, select the title of the article you wish to be alerted on.
  5. A new window opens.  On the right side,  click “Create Citation Alert
  6. Follow the instructions for confirming your alert.

Another product, CiteAlert from Elsevier, will automatically email an  author when their work is referenced in a new article.  This service is only for articles published since 2005, in selected dental journals.


2007 Journal Citation Reports Now Available

The latest edition edition of ISI’s Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is now available to URMC affiliates. 

JCR evaluates and compares journals using citation data drawn from over 9100 scholarly and technical journals, and published meeting proceedings from more than 3,300 publishers in over 60 countries.

To access the database, select the link for “Journal Citation Reports” on this page. To view the data for dentistry journals, choose the option to view by subject.
