Affordable Care Act Resources

October 4, 2013

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), which became law in March 2010, has made health insurance accessible to many previously uninsured.

The enrollment period for health insurance began this week on October 1st, 2013 for coverage beginning in January 2014. For anyone who needs more information on insurance enrollment, government websites and public libraries offer resources to help.

Miner Library has compiled a list here:

Re-register with Lexicomp

July 30, 2013

Has your Lexicomp app expired?

Even if you only just downloaded the app in June, you may still get an “expired” message when you try to use the Lexicomp app.

If you’re a Eastman Dental Center faculty, staff or student go to Lexicomp on a desktop computer and click the link labeled “Mobile App Access” on the far right side of the screen.Lexicomp_Mobile_Button_Capture Select your mobile platform from the dropdown list and follow the instructions to re-register with the new Product Code. You do not need to do a complete reinstall of the app.

The other Eastman clinics.

Eastman Dental Clinic in London.

Eastman Dental Clinic in London.

Eastman Institute for Oral Health, earlier known as the Rochester Dental Dispensary, was the first dental clinic to be funded by Mr. George Eastman. However, Mr. Eastman was so pleased with the Dispensary’s work that he helped fund five other clinics in Europe in the cities of London, Rome, Brussels, Stockholm and Paris, to provide dental care for children. From 1929 to 1937, Dr. Burkhart, the Dispensary’s director, represented Mr. Eastman in official visits to establish the clinics and was present at each dedication. Many of these clinics, which were the first of their kind, are still active today.

Eastmaninstitutet, which was dedicated in 1936, is located in Vasastaden, Stockholm, Sweden. Like the Rochester dispensary, the Institutet had a dental hygiene school.

The London Institute, now University College London (UCL) Eastman Dental Institute, is now the largest postgraduate dental academic centre in Europe, and known for dental education, research, and clinical care. You can read more about The Eastman’s history in this 2007 British Dental Journal article

Here’s a 1923 announcement in San Jose News about the Rome clinic, courtesy of Google. Premier Benito Mussolini was present at the dedication in 1933. The Eastman Dental Hospital of Rome is currently the largest dental center in Italy.

The Brussels clinic stopped treating patients in the ’80’s, and is in the process of becoming a museum for European history.

Below are a few photographs of the Paris clinic. Want to know more? Visit our online exhibit on Eastman’s European Dental Clinics Print materials are preserved in EIOH’s Bibby Archives.

HIGH NOON on 5/30: MOOCs, the world’s best courses for free

May 28, 2013

Are you interested in Massive Open Online Courses, known as MOOCs?

At Noon on Thursday, May 30 Miner Librarians Linda Hasman and Valorie Hallinan will be talking about MOOCs in the History of Medicine Room of Miner Library.

I plan to attend, and I hope to see you there!

MOCCs Wordle

Improvisation. How to Build a Blog. Computational Neuroscience. The History of Rock. Cryptography.

All of these are MOOCs, or Massive Open Online Courses. The MOOC revolution is making the best teachers and classes available at no cost to anyone with an internet connection.

Please join us at Miner on Thursday, May 30 at HIGH NOON when librarians Linda Hasman and Valorie Hallinan will explore MOOCs.

We’ll look at the “big three” MOOCs, how to enroll in a MOOC, whether you can MOOC your way through college, and some of the controversy surrounding MOOCs. Plus, we’ll feature sneak previews of some of the more tantalizing MOOCs.

Everyone is welcome to this free event. Bring your lunch if you’d like. Please note that this month’s HIGH NOON is on Thursday.

For more information, contact Linda Hasman at 275-3399 or Valorie Hallinan at 275-6873.

New Hours at Bibby Library

May 21, 2013

Thank you to all our dedicated users for your patience as I have transitioned into my new role as Bibby Librarian.  For those that may not have heard, the position is now part-time, so I’m at Bibby Library 24 hours per week.

This will cause some changes, the first being the library’s hours of operation.

Bonnie and I have worked together to create a schedule that maximizes the number of business hours that we are open.

We hope you approve!

New Bibby Library Hours of Operation:

  • Monday:       8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Tuesday:       8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Wednesday: 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM
  • Thursday:     8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Friday:          8:30 AM to 12:00 PM

Don't Forget! smiley icon

Even though the library is no longer staffed on Wednesday morning or Friday afternoon, keep in mind that authorized users can still access the library at any time with their University ID.

All we ask is that you refrain from propping the door open, nor allowing access to unauthorized users. Bibby library is open to the public only during staffed hours, and having the doors locked in our absence insures the safety of our facility, the collection, and our users.

Thanks for your cooperation!
